Get Smarter

Are you a Real Estate Professional or a Realtor?

What’s the difference you may ask?

There is a difference.  The difference is where the Professionals separate themselves from the majority of you.  I don’t mean to be offensive here, but let’s just be honest about it.  The industry is simple to get into and requires no real skill set.  It’s even easier to renew your license every four years.

Real Estate really is an amazing industry – anyone can get into it and make a ton of money!  The market provides opportunity to make a lot of money regardless of what the economy is doing, so naturally it attracts a lot of people who want to be a Realtor.

Yet most fail within the first two years.  Why?

After 7/8 years in the business here in San Diego I have come to the conclusion that most fail or quit the business after a short time because they refuse to….

  1. Learn the necessary skills
  2. To invest their time, energy & money into their business
  3. Ask for help
  4. Step outside their comfort zone of complacency

So what does this mean and  how does any of this apply to you?

Great question!

As I stated, most Realtors never take the time to become a true real estate professional or expert.  Therefore, if you make the effort to become the professional / expert you will see that your business and income increase exponentially.

I believe there are three pillars that you need to focus on if you want to be a true real estate professional:

  1. Continued Education – SDAR offers a wide variety of CE Courses and I recommend you get in the habit of taking 1-2 courses every quarter.  I highly encourage you to take the ABR and RMS courses right away, both are full of great information that will impact your business in a positive way immediately.
  2. Training – In my opinion this may be the single largest void in the real estate industry.  Don’t get me wrong I understand that every company, especially Corporate America, offers training.  And at first glance these training programs look great, they are scheduled well in advance, they have catchy class names, and provide a well needed structure for most.  The problem is this: all this does is give you a false sense of security by making you feel busy.  It promotes “busyness” not “business”.  At Dream Design Realty we use “Transactional Training & Support” to train our agents.  This is hands-on, real life training when the agent needs it.  Any other kind of training is simply a waste of everyone’s time.
  3. Coaching – Realtors have an abundance of opportunities when it comes to coaching.  Unfortunately most choose to spend their time & money to attend a once a year coaching seminar that gets them all fired up, but does very little to motivate & inspire them the other 360-364 days out of year.  If you are going to spend money on a coach, hire a local coach that you can meet with in-person on a weekly basis for atleast 3-6 months.
